Matador Monthly Newsletter - Too Mainstream For Me
My favorite part of the monthly Matador newsletter is not the band news that dominates the top 2/3rds of the email, but the always-interesting lists of "favorite things" picked by Matador-associated artists and staffers.
It's usually a contest to see who can pick the most obscure stuff to be into, because you know, Matador people are cooler than the rest of us. These guys make me feel so un-hip, I think even Sufjan won't talk to me.
This month's newsletter is no exception, with appropriately exotic listening picks from the likes of Early Man, Mark Ohe (Matador Records), Dave Martin (Matador Direct), and Jesper Eklow (Matador Records). Sure, some of the Beggar's Banquet folks were checking out such top-40 fare as Iron & Wine/Calexico, Sigur Ros, Xiu Xiu, and Minus the Bear, but who can trust those people anyways?
Early Man chose ten "Heavy Jams" for October, including such classic rock radio fare as Budgie, Juan De La Cruz, and Clark Hutchinson. Mark Ohe picked "10 Great Songs", all by the band Lungfish. Wasn't Carson Daly interviewing them on TRL the other day?
Dave Martin couldn't get enough of the Yura Yura Teikoku Na.Ma.Shi.Bi.Re.Na.Ma.Me.Ma.I CD and the Black Lips Let It Bloom CDR, while Jesper was reading The Rag-Time Ephemeralist issues #2 & #3 periodical (ACME Novelty Library). Barnes & Noble, here I come.
